Crisis Management Counseling

There are, simply put, times or events that threaten to overwhelm an enterprise. Recognition of their advent is usually much later than it could/should have been. Sometimes the cause is external and there is nothing that could have prevented its coming, though there might have been adjustments to accommodate it. Often the impact of crisis situations is the product of simple denial. Rarely is the circumstance at hand the product of only one issue.

Often, the initial reaction is qualitatively inappropriate. This is so because when awful things are happening to you, you are the one person with only the slightest chance of being able to view matters objectively. Usually, there is no one in the company who can be objective to the degree necessary for effective remediation. There are simply too many counterproductive forces (financial, emotional, interpersonal) at work in the minds and hearts of those at ground zero.

This is when we do our best. We bring objective triage analytical insights that are not susceptible to anyone's angst whose investment and reputation are on the line. This is what is needed. Political correctness, while liminally necessary at least as a matter of courtesy or sensitivity, is not allowed to become the shroud that prevents insights from having curative effect. Reality perception by experienced professionals who are outside the box looking in is simply indispensable.

Whether it is micro surgery or calling upon more diverse disciplines or just owning up in a forthright manner to unfortunate decisions having been made -- no one is perfect -- reality based analysis is brought to bear at once.

Properly approached, emergencies need not, in most cases, drag on and on. Most good solutions are immediate solutions.

The important first issue is immediacy of involvement. The longer one waits to obtain curative assistance, the more likely it is that the remedies will be more harsh and that the risk of going over the edge may already have arisen. The earlier on we can begin to deal with your recognition that an emergency may be in the offing, the greater the likelihood that prevention rather than damage control may be available.
